More than a decade of bird appreciation passed though before the day included an informal ballot to determine the favorite bird of the state. So, on Bird Day, April 13, 1928, the bluebird won the informal referendum. Legislation was not forthcoming, and the bluebird became the unofficial state bird – for 42 years!
