Moss gardens can be established in three ways:

  1. First, by clearing ground and waiting for airborne spores to land.
  2. Second, by encouraging already-present mosses by pulling out grass and weeds and acidifying (or in some cases, liming) the soil.
  3. Third, by cultivating it (see A Moss Milkshake).

Is a moss garden hard to maintain?

Once established, a moss lawn has several advantages over turfgrass, most of which fall into the low-maintenance category. As moss is short, under 4 inches, it does not require mowing.

There are so many sites with mineral toxins where our regular plants can,t grow properly, even if we use high-quality fertilizer, soil, and special nutrients. But on the other hand, Moss not only grows in these sites but also absorbs the toxins and makes the soil clean so other plants can also grow there easily.

Is it good to have moss in your garden?

Moss is not harmful to your lawn or garden, but it does indicate that there may be a drainage or soil compaction problem. If these conditions don't seem to be hampering the growth of your garden plants, you might even consider yourself lucky.

You can walk on a moss garden and it can even benefit from being walked on when first laid to help it establish. The majority of moss can tolerate light foot-traffic but it is worth adding a path or stepping stones in the lawn to help reduce footfall.

Some mosses can survive in full sun, though most prefer shade. Moss can grow on any type of soil because their shallow roots simply hold the moss there without drawing nutrients from the soil. They get some nutrients from water, but mostly they make their own food through photosynthesis.

California has one of the most species rich moss floras in North America (Malcolm, et al, 2009).

Can you pick moss and grow it?

Press chunks of the moss into the soil and push a stick through each piece to hold it in place. Keep the area moist and the moss will begin to establish itself and spread within a few weeks.
