Hoyas are highly adaptable and will thrive provided the mix is porous but still able to retain moisture. A basic recipe would be: 30% coarse coconut coir, 40% potting mix and 30% perlite. Alternatively, many hoya collectors happily use Scotts Osmocote Orchid Mix.
Can I use succulent soil for hoya?
Hoyas are versatile, popular house plants capable of growing in a variety of types of soil. Some grow their Hoyas with great success using a bagged African Violet soil. Others grow beautiful Hoya specimens in well-draining succulent soil, and some swear by their homemade organic potting soil mix.

The overall goal while mixing the soil is to create a mixture that is airy and chunky and allows water to easily pass through the soil.
Do Hoya plants like terracotta pots?
You can successfully grow hoya in terra cotta pots, plastic or glazed ceramics, provided the pot contains bottom drainage holes. Pots that don't drain create soil that remains wet and the Hoya carnosa will rot. Select a clean pot or hanging basket that is 1 to 2 inches larger than the present one.

Terra cotta pots work well for hoyas since they are porous and dry out quickly. You can also plant directly in a flexible, plastic nursery pot and then slip your plant into a decorative cachepot.

I start by filling a bowl with different sizes of orchid bark. If you like a chunkier mix, use larger pieces of bark. Smaller pieces if you prefer a finer mix. I tend to like a slightly finer mix and so I use the small and medium bark sizes.
Are Hoyas sensitive to repotting?
Repotting: Hoyas don't mind being root bound. Keep in the same pot for years, but remember to fertilize throughout spring and summer.

The roots develop really quick. 3-4 weeks is all it should take. It is also possible to propagate some hoya plants by leaf cuttings.
How often should you repot a hoya plant?
As a general rule, I repot my smaller hoyas every 5 years. My hoya topiary is a different. It's in a tall pot and won't need repotting for at least 10 years. This is not because the plant will be potbound but because I want it to have fresh mix.

Hoya plants do like coffee grounds. Hoya plants prefer an acidic environment, so it would be acceptable to add some coffee grounds into their soil. Coffee grounds do help this plant grow green and glossy leaves and to boost the soil.
Can you root Hoya in sphagnum moss?
The best way to propagate Hoya is to take cuttings that have two nodes. A node is a place where the leaves emerge from the stem. Either place them in a vase with water or into a jar with moist sphagnum moss. Check on them every few weeks.
Do Hoyas like deep or shallow pots?
Since most hoya species grow in the wild as epiphytes, they don't have deep roots – which means they don't need deep pots. Choosing a pot on the shallow side that is only one size up from your current container will provide enough room for your houseplant's roots while helping to prevent waterlogging.

Should you mist a hoya plant?
All misting does is raise the humidity level around the plant until the water has evaporated, which isn't very long. So, it really isn't very useful, and isn't something that Hoyas really need. Just remember that the thicker the leaves, the less frequently a Hoya needs to be watered.
Do Hoya plants like to hang?
Most Hoyas are vining houseplants that love to find their way around anything they can touch. Wax plants like the Hoya carnosa species have a way of wrapping their new growth around the thinnest supports, even hangers!
Do Hoyas like sun or shade?
Most hoya plants prefer medium to bright, indirect light. Some do well with about two hours of direct sunlight in the morning or evening, but too much sun exposure may burn their leaves or turn them yellow.
