Water stress is one of the more common causes of Hoya leaves shrivelling and becoming soft and wrinkled. Overwatering your plants is definitely a problem – especially for Hoya plants. They require well draining soils, that has good water retention properties.

What does an overwatered Hoya look like?

An overwatered hoya dies from the roots up. If the tips of your hoya are shriveling, yellowing, browning, etc, that is due to underwatering. If the leaves are suddenly falling and the base of the petioles look weak and brown, that is overwatering.

Why is my plant leaf wrinkled?

“Plants can get heat stress from being exposed to too much direct light or heat – to counteract this, they try to conserve moisture by curling up their leaves,” explains Richard Cheshire, Patch's plant doctor.

How do you dry An overwatered Hoya?

If you see or feel signs of overwatering, move fast, especially if it's a thick-stemmed Hoya.

  1. remove the entire plant from the soil.
  2. using paper towels press any excess moisture out of the roots that you can.
  3. lay the plant down, roots exposed, and let the roots dry out.

Can Hoyas get too much humidity?

There are three groups of Hoyas - those that like it cool, from 10C to 25C, those that like 15/16C to 35C (the majority) and Hoyas that like it really warm, up to 35/40C. Humidity-wise, most Hoyas are happy around 50%. Some do need 60-70%, and Doug grows these in grow tents in his basement (pictured below).

How do I know if my Hoya needs water?

On average, you should water your Hoya once every 14 days in the spring and summer. Before you water your plant, it's important to check whether the soil is completely dry. Your Hoya needs to dry out completely before you water it again to stay happy and healthy.

How do you tell if Underwatering vs overwatering?

Determine which by feeling the leaf showing browning: if it feels crispy and light, it is underwatered. If it feels soft and limp, it is overwatered. Yellowing leaves: Usually accompanied by new growth falling, yellow leaves are an indication of overwatering.

Should Hoyas be bottom watered?

Also, I only water from the bottom. That way the Hoyas are fully watered, and will get nice deep roots. I give them enough water for their roots to soak up as much as they can in about 10 minutes, and dump out any water that's left afterwards.

Can an overwatered plant fix itself?

Overwatered plants can sometimes recover on their own, but it depends on the plant and the extent of the overwatering. If the roots have rotted, the plant will likely not recover. However, if the overwatering has only caused the leaves to wilt, the plant may be able to bounce back.

Can wrinkled leaves recover?

Do not remove wrinkled leaves unless you are absolutely certain that the leaf is dead or unless the leaf needs to be removed to avoid spreading disease or fungus. Ideally, the wrinkled leaves will recover and regain their former healthy appearance over time after you correct the problem.

Can shriveled leaves recover?

Plants that are wilted in the afternoon will often perk back up at night and look perfectly happy by morning. If the plants' leaves do not appear stressed in the morning, they can probably go another day or two before needing water.

What is crinkled leaves?

Crinkle leaf is caused by a spontaneous mutation that occurs within buds. Leaves that develop from affected buds have irregular, deeply indented margins and are distorted. The distorted portion of the leaf is often light green or mottled.

What does overwatering look like?

If a plant is overwatered, it will likely develop yellow or brown limp, droopy leaves as opposed to dry, crispy leaves (which are a sign of too little water). Wilting leaves combined with wet soil usually mean that root rot has set in and the roots can no longer absorb water.

What does Hoya root rot look like?

sometimes go unnoticed until symptoms are quite advanced. This is probably due to the waxy nature of the plant which retards wilting even when all roots are rotted. Lesions on the stems are usually brown to black and can be mushy or dry. Roots are gray to black and can also be mushy or dry.

Should you mist Hoya?

Hoya are tropical plants that thrive in humid conditions. Use a humidifier to bring the humidity levels up, especially in winter when indoor air tends to be dry. A saucer with gravel and water also provides humidity as the water evaporates. Misting with room-temperature water also helps but avoid spraying the flowers.

Why do Hoyas wrinkle?

Wrinkled leaves can be caused by a few issues such as underwatering, overwatering, or low humidity. Your Hoya likes to dry almost all the way down between waterings. However, extended periods of dryness will cause the roots to start to shrivel and die back.

Do Hoyas like low light?

Hoyas are not fussy about light either. They'll do best in a bright location, but will be just fine in low light conditions, too. You don't need to fertilize hoyas very often, but an occasional light dose of liquid houseplant fertilizer in the spring and summer will be beneficial.

Do Hoyas need direct sunlight?

Do Hoya Plants Like Direct Sunlight? Most hoya plants prefer medium to bright, indirect light. Some do well with about two hours of direct sunlight in the morning or evening, but too much sun exposure may burn their leaves or turn them yellow.

How often should you water hoyas? Water your plant about once a week during summer and once every 2 weeks during winter.

Do hoyas like deep or shallow pots?

Since most hoya species grow in the wild as epiphytes, they don't have deep roots – which means they don't need deep pots. Choosing a pot on the shallow side that is only one size up from your current container will provide enough room for your houseplant's roots while helping to prevent waterlogging.
